10 Fascinating Covers Of Led Zeppelin Classics
1. Eric Gales - Trampled Under Foot
The intoxicating funk-rock riff that runs throughout Trampled Under Foot apparently emerged from a Led Zeppelin jam session, with lyrics inspired by legendary bluesman Robert Johnson's Terraplane Blues.
Chances are, if you're a Zep fan, you will already by familiar with Johnson's extraordinary recordings, but if not, you owe it yourself to check them out. Zep's song owed much to Stevie Wonder's rolling, deep-funk classic Superstition, but Zep, of course, added plenty of power and unique style to everything they recorded.
Eric Gales, should you not yet have encountered this extraordinary musician, is a prodigiously talented blues guitarist. Yet to hit 50, Gales started playing aged just four, and has 18 albums to his name (with credits on dozens more). His entire back-catalogue is worth checking out, but you could do far worse than start here.
Gales version first appeared on Whole Lotta Blues, a Led Zeppelin tribute album which could possibly be the best such project out there. Gales' version of Trampled Under Foot provides the perfect showcase for this extraordinary musician's mercurial skills. As with every song on this list, Gales is not merely paying homage here - the guitarist puts his own stamp on the song, digging into its heart to discover what makes it special.
