10 Fascinating Covers Of Led Zeppelin Classics
5. CCS - Whole Lotta Love
Anyone who grew up in the UK during the 70s and 80s will be familiar with this classic, which served as the theme-tune to the popular and long-running chart show, Top Of The Pops. CCS (Collective Consciousness Society) were a UK group formed by respected bluesman Alexis Korner, whose contribution to the British music scene during the 60s is incalculable. Whole Lotta Love itself, of course, formed the subject of one of Zep's many court-cases, based as it was (un-credited) on a Willie Dixon song, You Need Love, which was first recorded by the great Muddy Waters in 1962.
Sloppy as early Zep may have been in appropriately crediting their work, Whole Lotta Love remains distinctly Zep in nature, with Jimmy Page's original guitar riff indelibly associated with the band. CCS stick largely to the full-on rock of the original, although they start out from deceptively peaceful horn and piano, before exploding into a powerful jam. Jazzy touches, including rattling cymbals, hand-percussion and a brass section add much, teasing out new layers and adding a streetwise, distinctly '70s feel.
This could have been the theme tune to the gritty, urban cop drama of your choice. It remains a wonderful listening experience.
