10 Fascinating Covers Of Led Zeppelin Classics
4. Deodato - Black Dog
Another Led Zeppelin classic linked to the legendary Headley Grange studios (the song was named for a black Labrador which wandered the grounds), Black Dog was actually recorded at Island Studios in London. John Paul Jones takes main credit for this one, writing the main riff and composing the deceptively complex time-sequence changes. Both Fleetwood Mac and Muddy Waters are cited as inspirations/influences for Black Dog, but this is yet another song which is so linked to Zep that it takes a brave soul to attempt to cover it.
Step forward the ridiculously talented Eumir Deodato, who records simply as Deodato.
Primarily a jazz artist, Deodato's eclectic body of work takes in all genres, as exemplified on this track. The Grammy-winning musician, who has produced for such diverse talents as Frank Sinatra, Roberta Flack and Bjork, adds a wonderful street-wise jazz feel to Black Dog. All the power and swagger remains, but added in are a subtle jazz swing, piano flourishes and moments of high drama.
Anyone familiar with the great Herbie Hancock's '70s crossover albums will find much to admire here. Deodato preserves the spirit of the original while uncovering new strands to explore.
