10 Fascinating Niche Music Genres Which Need To Be Heard

4. Chap Hop

One of the strangest and, almost certainly, the most eccentric entry on this list, Chap Hop is an uniquely English genre which mixes hip-hop with strong elements of Steampunk and/or Chappist aesthetics. Steampunk, of course, is a long-lived and much-loved style which has influenced creatives across multiple disciplines, most notably literature and art. Its roots lie in the works of early science fiction writers such as Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. Its distinctive style merges sci-fi concepts with Victorian designs.

Chappist refers to The Chap, a humorous lifestyle magazine for men which began in 1999 and espouses a return to old-fashioned manners and fashions, playing up to the stereotypical view of 'old England' – a nation of cricket greens, pipe-smokers and elaborate moustaches.

Add in a healthy dash of self-deprecating humour and a large portion of classic beats and flowing rhymes and you have Chap Hop. An entertaining, if possibly ephemeral sub-genre which boasts plenty of good-natured fun and not a little craft.
