10 Fascinating Stories Behind Rock Music Star Stage Names

In the grand scheme of rock music, Marillion are one of the most underrated bands in history.

Though they have been successful, selling 15 million records worldwide, Marillion never achieved the level of fame that their talent should have afforded. Still, this hasn't stopped them from building a loyal fanbase over the years, all of whom will be familiar with the work of a man called Fish.

Joining the group in 1981, Fish served as the band's lead singer and lyricist until his departure in 1988. He performed on the band's only UK number one album and was the singer on arguably their most famous single, Kayleigh.

Strangely enough, Fish was not the name assigned to this gentleman at birth; in fact, it was given to him by a former landlord. Apparently, the singer liked to spend a lot of time in the bath, which is where this aquatic alter-ego came from.

Fish was all too happy to take on this new title, as he was born with the rather unfortunate name of Derek William Dick. In the man's own words, "It became very necessary to find a nickname as quickly as possible."
