10 Fascinating Stories Behind Rock Music Star Stage Names

2. Don’t Worry, Bee Happy - Sting

At the top of their game, English band The Police were one of the biggest acts in the entire world.

Through songs like Message in a Bottle, Roxanne, and Every Breath You Take, their brand of New Wave-infused radio rock made them rich and famous beyond their wildest dreams and allowed them to split after just five albums knowing that they had done themselves proud.

A trio, The Police were comprised of guitarist Andy Summers, drummer Stewart Copeland, and bassist and singer Gordon Sumner. Thankfully for Gordy and everyone else, he was better known to the world as Sting.

Sumner's mononym originated from his days playing in a group called the Phoenix Jazzmen. He frequently wore a black and yellow striped jumper, prompting the bandleader to remark that he looked like a bee.

Bee's have stingers, stingers sting, the rest is history.

Sting has been called Sting for so long now that even his own mother would refer to him as that, if the man himself is to be believed.
