10 Forgotten 70s Singles You Need To Hear

8. Talking Heads - Take Me To The River (1978)

Most people think of Talking Heads as an '80s band. They were pioneers of dance-rock, post-punk and new wave. Their biggest records, Remain in Light, and Speaking in Tongues, would define the '80s post-punk scene. But the three albums they released in the '70s contained some equally groundbreaking material.

Psycho Killer was their most defining track from this era, appearing on their 1977 debut. But they soon followed it up with a cover of Al Green's, Take Me To The River. It was a song covered by almost every big hitter in the game at the time. Both, Bryan Ferry and blues-rock group Foghat covered it, but neither version had the same impact as the Heads'.

There's always been a duality to the Heads' sound. They have the ability to seem staccato, rigid and even robotic, while at the same time having an intrinsic swinging rhythm. No one could play with texture like these guys, exemplified perfectly on this single. Forget about guitar solos and hip thrusting frontmen, the Heads were the true stars of the '70s.
