10 Forgotten 70s Singles You Need To Hear

5. Aerosmith - Dream On (1973)

Long before Steven Tyler and co. had to reinvent themselves, by teaming up with Run-D.M.C. in the late '80s, they were classic rock monoliths. Their breakthrough came with the ultimate rock ballad Dream On. It would receive a second life when Eminem recruited Aerosmith to rerecord their classic melody for his 2002 track, Sing For The Moment. Although the Slim Shady version is great - and perhaps more well known by the younger generation - nothing beats the original.

Up until this point Tyler hadn't really exhibited the full range of his voice on a record. Dream On gave him a chance to flex those vocal cords. Augmented by Joe Perry's building guitar lines, and swirling riffs, Tyler delivered perhaps his greatest vocal performance of his career. He sang with uncharacteristically, deep croon for majority of the track, until the final section when he ripped his signature, wide-mouthed scream.

The '70s was the time of the power ballad, by the '80s the art became an over bloated caricature of itself, and by the '90s Aerosmith came full circle, with the shamelessly cheesy I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing. But goddamn, was Dream On good.
