10 Forgotten 70s Singles You Need To Hear

4. Dr. John - Right Place, Wrong Time (1973)

Dr. John was the warlock of the New Orleans boogie sound. He fused jazz, blues, funk, R&B and psychedelic rock into something unmistakably his own. During the '60s this guy was the session musician everyone wanted on their record. He played with everyone from Sonny & Cher to Frank Zappa, and the Rolling Stones. If there was a hit with some boogie piano on it, chances were Dr. John had been approached to feature.

Throughout the '70s the voodoo wizard of music continued to collaborate with artists across the musical spectrum; but he also saw a rise in his solo popularity, particularly after the release of his top ten single, Right Place, Wrong Time.

It might be one of the smoothest grooves of the era, thanks in no small part, to The Meters who featured as John's backing band. Need a reminder of who the Meters were? Cissy Strut is all you need to hear. Augmented by one of the tightest funk groups in the business, John's distinctively moody vocals, and boogie-woogie piano playing, gained him the mainstream attention he deserved.
