10 Forgotten 90s Rock Bands Worth Rediscovering

6. Dave Stewart And The Spiritual Cowboys

Another short-lived yet wonderful outfit, Dave Stewart And The Spiritual Cowboys featured a wealth of talent, not least the man himself, who of course for many years served as one half of Eurythmics, offering up era-defining hit after hit.

Stewart's Spiritual Cowboys released just two albums of their own, a self-titled debut in 1990 and follower, Honest, released just a year later. A supergroup of relatively modest standing, the Cowboys named Martin Chambers (from the Pretenders) and John Turnbull (from Ian Dury's Blockheads) among their ranks, alongside the wonderful backing vocals of Nan Vernon.

Musically, the Cowboy's were rockier than the Eurythmics, although they weren't shy of incorporating keyboards and synths into their sound. Thematically, the band tackled diverse and eccentric subjects ranging from fashion and romance to mystic bikers and lost causes. Stewart and co were far too accomplished to simply go through the moves.

Every song bursts with its own quirky energy and style, with wild rock edges and fantastically playful vocals. The Cowboys could be unashamedly catchy, wonderfully atmospheric and beautifully cryptic. Whatever they served up, it was always classy, fun and nuanced.
