10 Forgotten Rock Albums That Need To Be Heard

8. Tragic Magic By Madder Rose

This 90s NYC alt rock band have recently re-united, but this 97 release remains a classic. Really, you could shoe-horn any of the band's first four albums into this list. Madder Rose possess style, class and a potent weapon in the form of lead-singer Mary Lorson's beautiful vocals.

Guitarist Billy Coté, drummer Johnny Kick and bassist Matt Verta-Ray round out the group on Tragic Magic, which, from opener, Narco, plunges head on into psychedelic, trip-hop territory.

The rhythm section does a fine job of laying down a sleazy, hazy, stoner-rock feel. Coté's guitar is both melodic and cutting. Every song here has something to offer, and a unifying theme of unsettling paranoia ties it all together nicely.

Then, too, there's no little beauty on display throughout the record. Even when sounding at their bleakest, Madder Rose conjure up such sweet melodies that you can't help but surrender yourself to their music. It's a difficult task to create such affecting, yet hard-hitting songs. Madder Rose do so with ease.
