10 Genuine Reactions That Made Songs Better

7. Been Caught Stealing - Jane's Addiction

At the beginning of Jane’ s Addiction’s 1990 hit Been Caught Stealing, the sound of a dog barking can be heard. The use of the dog’s bark was purely coincidence.

Lead singer Perry Farrell had recently got a dog, named Annie, from a shelter. As the dog was still rather needy, Farrell decided to bring her to recording sessions rather than leave her at home. As Perry went into the booth and started to sing, the dog started to get excited, jumping around and barking.

It was at this point that everyone in the studio thought it might be interesting to hear what the dog's barking on the record would sound like. Perry brought Annie into the studio and got her excited enough to bark again, whilst someone hit record. The result was, as Rolling Stone would put it, “the best use of dog barks since Pet Sounds.”
