10 Glorious "Dad Rock" Albums
8. Boston - Boston
If you've seen the rest of the list so far, you probably thought the dad era of rock and roll didn't have the first clue what rock actually meant. Compared to the likes of hair metal or grunge, this is the kind of watered down rock and roll that no one really listens to because it's too sleepy. To that, let your humble author raise you one of the greatest selling rock albums of all time.
Whereas something like Creedence may have been more folksy than rock in some spots, Boston's debut record is a rock album from skin to core, showing Tom Scholz flexing his musical chops across multiple instruments. Even when playing the standard rock chords and bluesy material on songs like Smokin, you can still hear the natural love of rock and roll seeping through their veins.
It also helps when you have a superhuman singer like Brad Delp, who's natural register is one of the greatest in rock and roll or any other genre for that matter, sending songs like More Than a Feeling into the stratosphere. Boston's debut is also one of the greatest sounding records of the '70s as well, being the basis for Tom Scholz' Rockman guitar sound, which would become a staple going forward. We got killer tunes, solos for days, and new technology built out of Scholz' garage...what's not to love?
