For all of the head scratching decisions she's made throughout her career, Courtney Love has really been given a raw deal. In the wake of Kurt Cobain's tragic passing, there were many fans who painted Courtney as the villain of the Nirvana story, saying that she drove a wedge between him and the rest of the band and even some people claiming that she married him only for his money. You can call attention to her eccentric interviews all you want, but you can't take anything away from the attitude behind Live Through This.

Even though the actual album title wasn't really well received in light of Kurt's death, the rest of the album is Courtney through and through, taking all of the negative energy that she had inside from the paparazzi being at her doorstep and channeling it into her work, making for one of the greatest riot grrl albums ever made. While there are a few songs that definitely sound Nirvana-esque, you would never find Kurt Cobain writing a song like Miss World, which paints Love as the disaffected girl that is willing to take down the boys' club singlehandedly if she needs to.

As the wounds of Kurt's death started to heal though, time has actually been a lot kinder to this album as well, with Love being happy to fly the flag for the more savage side of alternative rock. There's nothing that's going to end up bringing Kurt back, but maybe he saw the true artist that was lost on all of us who saw the paparazzi photos.
