5. Crazy Horses - The Osmonds
For all of the other bands that have occupied spots on this list, this is really where we started crossing a few lines. Even though there can be some forgivable moments from Nickelback and Maroon 5, The Osmonds were practically a cartoon band, playing the more wholesome version of what pop stars were supposed to be like in the '70s. These guys were kids, but every band has to grow up some time, and Crazy Horses wasn't something that many of the housewives of the world were expecting them to make.
In lieu of the normal bubblegum pop songs, there are more than a few songs on here that get dangerously close to hard rock territory, including some incredibly strange musical choices. From the title track alone, the inclusion of the organ and having one of the older Osmonds taking vocal duties makes this feel like a long lost Deep Purple song, especially with the climbing guitar lick that keeps going throughout the song.
That's barely scratching the surface though, touching on everything from the Beatles to even some guitar grooves that manage to sound like a decent Led Zeppelin cut in some places. This may be considered under the radar these days, but even some rock stars had to fess up to liking these songs back in the day, with the title track being praised by Joe Elliot of Def Leppard and the entire record being a favorite of Paul Gilbert of Mr. Big. There's still no chance that any self respecting rock fan would call themselves an Osmonds fan, but for this one album, it's nice knowing that the kids have some decent taste in rock and roll.
