10 Great Albums You Didn't Understand The First Time

9. The 2nd Law - Muse

Muse was truly a band that dominated the 2000's rock scene. It seemed that every few years, the millennium's first decade was dominated by yet another stellar release from this English power trio. While many fans expected Muse to build on their epic momentum as they entered the 2010's, the revulsion brought to the band's 2011 album The 2nd Law seemed almost rapturous.

The band's choices for singles in "Madness" and "Panic Station" left fans insanely worried, with the band embracing dubstep and funk styles to a contentious reaction. Once the album was released with a more electronic tinge, diehard fans were quick to label this as the band's weakest effort.

That analysis tends to sell the album short though. The electronic elements are certainly dominant throughout the track listing, but the actual use of them are truly exquisite most of the time like on "Follow Me" and "Animals." There is also plenty of signature Muse tracks like the James Bond sounding "Supremacy" and even some experimentation like on the Chris Wolstenholme-fronted tracks "Save Me" and "Liquid State." Regardless of the acclaim it did or didn't receive, The 2nd Law was another fine example of Muse playfully taking risks with their musical vision.
