10 Great Albums You Didn't Understand The First Time
2. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd
Ask any Pink Floyd where to start with the band's discography, and you'll most likely get an answer of Dark Side of the Moon. The album is a masterful piece of art that has gone on to become almost synonymous with the rock genre itself. Then again, it's understandable if many people don't see the hype when combing through it the first go around.
For those uninitiated prog fans, this album does tend to be a bloated with some songs eclipsing the 6 minute mark and full of trading solos and standard rock vocals. Even if something like "The Great Gig in the Sky" boasts phenomenal vocals, the lack of lyrics can make it hard for most to grasp onto.
On the other hand, the way to look at this album is not from the standard pop rock prospective. This is one of the instances where the album almost needs to be taken in as a whole in order to be fully appreciated. While songs like "Breathe" are absolutely spellbinding, the melody gets even better when interpolated on other tracks like "Time." The band's attention to production detail also helps to keep the listener engaged from front to back. It may not have the Beatles' level of pop smarts, but this album is certainly one that must be heard on repeat in order to be truly comprehended.
