10 Great Albums You Didn't Understand The First Time
1. Pinkerton - Weezer
Weezer's debut was one of the most infectious pop rock albums to come out of the 90's. Alongside other bands like Green Day and Foo Fighters, these nerd rockers were able to pull the rock world out of the grunge doldrums and into something much more upbeat.
Where did the band decide to go after this? Start writing tunes with the same angst as their forefathers of the grunge community. When Pinkerton was released, it was not so much met with contention as much as it was full-blown hatred. The band's entire fanbase seemed either perplexed or just betrayed at the change in tone between albums. Backlash from this record was so bad that the band eventually went on hiatus and didn't resurface until the early 2000's.
What the fans missed out on on first glance was some of the most intimate songs Rivers Cuomo would ever write. Instead of the tuneful hits of their first release, Pinkerton paints the picture of a man who has finally become a star and suddenly realizes what a mess his life really is. From songs about lost love to angsty youthful loneliness, this album is one of the band's highest triumphs that never got its just due when it was first released.
