10 Great Bands With One Terrible Album
3. Diabolus In Musica - Slayer
Never in a million years were you going to hear the word 'sell out' be used in conjunction with Slayer. Ever since the early days of Show No Mercy, Kerry King and Jeff Hannemann always played by their own rules and didn't give a single sh*t as to what some of their contemporaries thought about them. Then again, it's not hard to see why they were tempted by the nu metal boom in the late '90s.
After coming off of a decent start to the '90s with Seasons in the Abyss, Diabolus in Musica shows Slayer at their most forgettable. While it's difficult to see a band that has a song like Raining Blood to be forgettable, a lot of these riffs seemed to be in one ear and out the other, being more focused on the heavy groove than the actual quality of the riff.
In fact, there are moments on here that feel closer to what a band like Korn would have done at the time, which makes for a weird fit when you have a monster like Kerry King behind the fretboard.
As far as King is concerned though, this is the record that holds up the least in their catalog, and at this point can you blame him? This is the kind of metal record that practically has the year 1998 pre-stamped on it.
