10 Great Hip Hop Albums With Only One Bad Song
6. Girls - Beastie Boys
If the Beasties Boys decided not to make anything else after Licensed to Ill, chances are we wouldn't be talking about them as titans of the genre. Although this record is one of the classics from the golden age of hip hop, the kind of juvenile humor wasn't something that endeared them to the giants of hip hop or anything. Also, it gets a lot harder to defend the track listing when you have a song like Girls in the mix.
Riding off of a backbeat that seems to be played on a xylophone, this is one of the more chauvinistic songs that the Beasties would ever make, making the case that girls are nothing more than just objects that wait on them hand and foot. When you look at this in the wake of the Me Too movement happening, hearing the bowery boy teenagers talking about their female counterparts like this just feels trashy nowadays.
If you were to ask them though, it's not like they were trying to right an anti-feminist song. Much like You Gotta Fight for Your Right to Party, the Beasties claim that this was meant to be satirical song about an ass*ole, before being taken completely out of context by those who thought they meant it sincerely. Still, with a future that involved records like Ill Communication, this is definitely a blemish on their early years.
