10 Great Rock Bands Who Never Released An Album
7. The Neat Change
Doubtless some of you reading this will have encountered UK band The Neat Change's sole recorded single, I Lied To Aunty May (Decca Records, 1968), which has featured on various excellent compilations over the years. That track, with its striking mix of prog rock, pop and psychedelia, has surely left many listeners delighted with the music and frustrated that there is no more from this group to be heard.
James Arthur Edwards, lead singer and songwriter for The Neat Change, was born in the late '40s in Chiswick, England, and fronted many bands over the following decades, all of which have interesting things to offer, but arguably none come close to the time-capsule masterpiece of I Lied To Aunty May.
You wouldn't guess it from the music, but The Neat Change, who formed in 1966, were actually one of the first skin-head groups on the scene. Edwards holds another notable claim to fame, in that he served as A&R man at Dawn Records, where he was responsible for signing Carl Douglas, of Kung Fu Fighting fame. That record, of course, doesn't come close to the majesty of I Lied To Aunty May, which is rightfully considered to be a classic of its time.
