10 Great Rock Bands Who Never Released An Album
5. The Freshies
How much you know about The Freshies probably depends on how much you know about that band's eccentric frontman, Chris Sievey, who went on to become much better known for his surreal comic character, Frank Sidebottom.
As Frank Sidebottom, Sievey rose to fame throughout the late '80s and early '90s, releasing music and appearing on radio and TV across the UK, always wearing his trademark 'inflatable head'.
Something of a cult here, the excellent 2014 film, Frank, was largely inspired by the Sidebottom character. As for The Freshies, they formed in Manchester, UK, in the late '70s and lasted into the early '80s, releasing a string of interesting singles on Sievey's own label, Razz Records.
Several future notables played with Sievey around this time, including Martin Jackson (Magazine, Swing Out Sister) and Billy Duffy (The Cult). It's well worth your while taking a closer look at the career of Sievey-as-Frank-Sidebottom. In the meantime, enjoy The Freshies and their excellent post-punk sound.
