10 Great Rock Songs Written In Anger

9. Animal - Pearl Jam

At the start of the 90's, Pearl Jam were becoming the biggest stars in the world thanks to the success of their debut record Ten. The album not only spawned hits like "Jeremy," but would go down as one of the greatest albums of the decade. Though it seemed time to celebrate, Eddie Vedder went back into the studio and he was pissed.

Vedder did not seem to want his newfound adulation and was quick to distance himself from the spotlight whenever he could. This involved everything from refusing interviews to not making any music videos for the band's new singles. While "Animal" is not the fiercest rocker on the band's sophomore effort Vs., it does paint a clear picture of how Vedder sees himself and the band at this time.

The whole song revolves around the chant of "Five Against One," which Vedder saw as his current position, him being the one amid his four bandmates and manager. When the label wanted the vocals turned up on the final mix, Vedder was quick to respond that they may not wish to hear what the real lyrics meant. Pearl Jam may not have fallen from grace at the time, but Vedder's bite in the lyrics shows that the band did seem to be on shaky ground.
