10 Great Rock Songs Written In Anger

8. Platypus (I Hate You) - Green Day

Across Green Day's first few records, there were countless songs that would be directed towards annoyance or hatred towards someone. Whether it be a jilted lover or just a pretentious yuppie, the band always found ways to express their anger in voracious punk rock tunes.

As the band entered the studio for their album Nimrod, the tunes seemed to take on many different styles from ballads to instrumentals to even country sounding tunes. That didn't mean they didn't know how to tear the place apart though. The song "Platypus" stands as one of the band's angriest recordings, with a feverish tempo that grabs you by the throat from the start.

While the song's title comes from Billie Joe Armstrong wanting to write a song called "Platypus," the real crux of the song comes from the parenthesized "I Hate You." The entire song seems to be one long condemnation of this nameless dude, who takes a beating throughout each verse. It all builds up to a breakdown where Armstrong throws out every expletive in the book to describe this guy's behavior. Given the verbal beating that this nameless guy takes over the track, let's hope he at least got some compensation for his troubles.
