10 Great Songs On Otherwise Terrible Albums
2. Trainwrecks - Weezer
After the abomination that was Raditude, Weezer needed a miracle if they ever wanted to be taken seriously again. Since the last record featured the likes of Lil Wayne and Jermaine Dupri as co writers on several tracks, a return to the basics with Hurley proved to be a bit too little too late for the hardcore fans, not even managing gold status when it first came out. However, there was a little nugget of genius buried in between the cracks on Trainwrecks.
Looking back on their career at this point, it's hard not to see a song like this as autobiographical for Weezer itself, with a protagonist that knows he has made some bad decisions in his life. Though he may seem unreliable and a bit of a screwup from day to day, the tone of the song is still optimistic, determined to battle whatever kind of problem comes his way next.
Compared to the nerdy rockers that you'd find on something like the Blue Album or Pinkerton, this is a great step in Weezer's evolution, pulling from the down and out losers that permeate different heartland rock stories like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. For all of the vitriol that came with seeing these guys cough it up time and time again, it's songs like these that prove that you shouldn't count them out just yet.
