10 Greatest Albums That Never Happened

3. Bob Dylan And Johnny Cash: The Dylan/Cash Sessions.

After the combined excitement and outrageous, brought on by the former darling of folk, turning to rock, Bob Dylan was burned out. In 1966 he crashed his Triumph Tiger 100 motorcycle, prompting him to stop touring and pull back from the public eye.

Over the next few years he drifted into the realms of country music, recording several albums in Nashville, Tennessee. During the early production of his ninth record, Nashville Skyline, Dylan was visited by the Man In Black, himself. Both, Johnny Cash and Dylan had long admired each other, and often hoped to collaborate. Together, they recorded the opening number to Dylan's new record, Girl from the North Country.

But, they also set time aside for a more loose collection of jams. Over a dozen tracks were recorded; mostly covers of existing Cash/Dylan material, as well as several gospel tracks. Nothing more came of these session, but over the years a number of bootlegs appeared. They were a fascinating insight into the musical interplay of two of America's greatest song writers. The songs were loose and playful, but both musicians displayed an innate respect for one another's material. Sadly, they never perused the recording of a full studio album, leaving only snippets of what could have been.
