10 Greatest Albums That Never Happened

4. Weezer: Songs From The Black Hole

Songs from the Black Hole was intended to be Weezer's follow up to their smash hit debut. The conception came about due to Rivers Cuomo becoming disillusioned by Weezer's rapid rise to success in 1994. Thrust into the limelight, he began feeling like his own hype was exaggerated. Cuomo found solace from his insecurity, by listening to various operas and musicals. He started developing the ideas for his own rock opera, as a way to prove his musical worth.

His concept detailed the dark and sinister voyage of the starship Betsy II. The allegorical tale represented the group's wild voyage to stardom. The ship's crew, symbolised the band; with Cuomo taking on the role of a reluctant captain, unsure about an interstellar mission he must embark on. Throughout the narrative, Cuomo's character becomes embroiled in a love triangle with various crew mates... There's also nods to the pressure Cuomo felt from his record label, represented by an interfering robot, who insists the mission must go ahead.

It was a grand, and farfetched concept, which nevertheless harboured some interesting results. Eventually Cuomo scrapped the project, after recording a number of demos, in favour of the even darker album Pinkerton.
