10 Greatest Anti-Love Songs In Rock Music History
6. You Really Got A Hold On Me - Smokey Robinson
There's a good reason why Motown was called the Hit Factory when things started to get rolling in the '60s. Off the strength of acts like The Supremes and the Temptations, we got some of the most straightforward love songs ever written, from My Girl to Baby Love climbing up the charts. As if to break up the monotony though, here we have Smokey Robinson sharing his love for...an absolutely toxic relationship.
Then again, if you were to just look at the title of this song, you would think that this is about as romantic as it gets. Once Smokey takes center stage, the relationship in this story is far from perfect, with the man being almost tortured by how much he has to depend on his woman. With each passing verse, you can practically feel him wanting to get out of this relationship, only to find one other thing convincing him to come back for more.
That chorus title drop might be a hell of a hook, but are we just supposed to ignore the fact that the very first lines of the song begin with "I don't like you?" As much as it might be a nice environment now, Smokey might need to cut things off while he can. If the toxicity grows, your emotions are going to take a beating as the years go by.
