10 Greatest Anti-war Songs In Rock

5. Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969)

Has there ever been a Vietnam War movie made that didn't include this song ? It instantly conjures up images of choppers soaring over tree tops, American G.I.s trudging through the jungle, and fiery walls of Napalm scorching the Vietnamese landscape.

This song didn't talk about an event in Vietnam specifically, or even criticise American foreign policy directly. It was merely an expression of helplessness from singer John Fogerty, who had been drafted for active service in Vietnam.

The title refers to those fortunate sons of politicians or people of influence who were able to dodge the draft entirely or else be posted to safer locations. It was all about the frustration many in his generation felt; young men were being sent to fight for a war they didn't believe in, and, what's more, many of them came from the underclass or the less privileged groups in society.

The song became a calling card for the anti-war movement and was played at many anti-war rallies, particularly by the Vietnam Veterans Against the War.
