Perhaps the most upbeat and fast paced song on Favourite Worst Nightmare, this song is an extended critique of the music and partying world. It's also incredibly meta. At one point of the song Alex sings 'The more you open your mouth, the more you're forcing performance' just as he starts to sing longer and louder. He is essentially saying that this very song critiquing forced performance is a forced performance in of itself, a trap that cannot be escaped once inside the industry.

This House Is a Circus is one of the band's most pessimistic songs, and contains some of Alex Turner's most astute and biting observations of the music industry. It also helps that the accompanying instrumental is chaotic and in your face, just like the titular circus.

It's the most self aware and perhaps honest Alex has ever been on record, and that's why it stands the test of time to remain on of their very best pieces of music.
