10 Greatest Arctic Monkeys Songs

3. From The Ritz To The Rubble

Part of the narrative of a typical night out on the band's first album, this is the song where the narrator describes his failed attempt to get into a club. He also compares nightclub bouncers to being totalitarian. It's a perfect showcase for Alex Turner's talent for bringing the poetic and the mundane together seamlessly.

In just over three minutes he is able to touch upon social anxieties, lad culture, masculinity and in the end, the aftermath of a night out. At the start of the album on 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' Alex wonders how girls will look whilst their out at the club. Now he is saying 'that girl's a different girl today'. It's the little details that truly sell this musical narrative.

The haze has ascended. The dust has settled. The narrator can finally look back on his chaotic night out with a clear head and judge just exactly what has happened. This is the morning after song and it's perfect.
