10 Greatest Australian Songs Of All Time

4. Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye

The ultimate sleeper hit from 2011, this number by relative unknown Gotye took its time in reaching the top of the charts, but proved damn hard to budge when it got there. The song is a complex mix of beats and musical styles with an equally complex mix of emotions present in the lyrics. Equal parts grunge and pop, the song is almost indefinable in its style, which is what makes the tune so damn good.

The song is an examination of the aftermath of a broken relationship, and proves to be quite a journey. Our sympathies lay firmly with the male in the relationship, singing of the poor treatment dished out by his ex, before the song turns our emotions on its head when Kimbra's angelic but bitter vocals spring to life.

The song was a chart topper around the world and even won a Grammy for best song, with the very innovative music video boosting the song's popularity significantly. Australian artists often benefit from strong music videos despite a minimal budget, and this is a perfect example here, the use of body paint executed in a deceptively clever fashion.
