10 Greatest Band Rivalries In Rock History

1. Metallica vs. Megadeth

As far as hard rock goes, rivalries don't get any colder than the one between Metallica and Megadeth. Ever since its inception in the mid-80's, fans still aren't able to get enough of the verbal sparring sessions between the two titans of speed metal. Though it seems as old as time itself, it all began with one firing.

In the early 80's, Metallica were making their way to the East Coast and guitarist Dave Mustaine was out of control. The entire band drank, but the more raucous side of Mustaine would come out and lead to a lot of violent behavior. As the band prepared to make a deal with indie label Megaforce Records, the band fired Mustaine before going into the studio to make Kill Em All.

After being thrown onto a Greyhound bus back to San Francisco, Mustaine was furious and determined to start his own band. Once he touched back down in California, Mustaine immediately began writing songs and formed Megadeth with David Ellefson to get back at Metallica for ruining his dream. Even if both bands have made up and have played shows together as part of the Big 4 back in 2010, fans continue to get endless entertainment from the metal gods and the spurned guitarist who made his own dream.
