10 Greatest Classic Rock Bands Of All Time
The best of the very best of classic rock...
As we all await in our homes hoping for some good news so we can resume our once active lives, there has never been a better time to reflect on the glory days of Rock. Attempting to pick an all time top 10 list has proven a great excuse to listen to some of the all time great rock anthems, but has also brought the pain of leaving legends of rock without the ranking they deserve.
There are far too many apologies to even begin listing here, although The Who and the Jimi Hendrix experience were the next two to be chosen. The desire to throw in a deserved left field selection like The Bee Gees(pre Disco of course) or tragically underrated Australian gems like The Skyhooks and Cold Chisel was unfortunately thwarted due to the quality bands that would be forced to be left out.
The criteria for this list came down to a few key factors, including worldwide recognition, the quantity of quality singles and albums produced, the band's overall impact and influence, and the ability to be embraced by a wide audience. While Top 40 success was not the sole criteria here, it was definitely taken into consideration, as was the band's ability to create music that has lasted the test of time.
So while this writer hopes you get some Satisfaction from this list, please Don't Cry on the comments section and learn to just Let it Be if you disagree.
10. Fleetwood Mac
It was a mighty close call for the final spot on this list, but Stevie Nicks and her crew managed to just edge out some hot competition. While founding members including Nick Fleetwood and the McVie couple garnered the band's first array of commercial success, it wasn't until the addition of Stevie Nicks into lead vocals in 1975 that the band really hit its peak.
Nicks brought a sultry tone and genuine emotion to her vocals, the ability to transition from aching heartbreak to exhilarating falsettos allowing tracks like 'Rhiannon' to sear to new heights.
While the exploration of love, relationships and heartbreak were front and centre in the band's songs, the ability to create upbeat numbers alongside their more heartfelt tracks distinguished them from many other bands of the era. The ability of using Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie or Nicks in the lead vocals, or sometimes all at the same time, gave the band great flexibility that proved a major strength.
The 1977 album Rumours was enough to gain the band entry on this list alone, an album chock full of hits including no less than five top ten hits. The band kept producing the hits throughout the late 70's and early 80's, including arguably the band's greatest hit, the explosive brass band accompanied Tusk. 1987's Tango in the Night album was the band's final classic album, further cementing Fleetwood Mac as one of the great rock bands, and the best featuring a lead Female vocalist.
