10 Greatest Classic Rock Led Zeppelin Songs
6. Immigrant Song
At the time of its release, "Immigrant Song" may have been one of the heaviest tracks that Zeppelin had ever laid down. From the initial shouts of Plant to the insistent guitar riff, the song was meant to be one of the band's greatest tunes from the moment it hit our eardrums.
Most of the track revolves around Page's maniacal octave riff, but the other elements of the tune are much more complicated than they appear. Throughout the chorus, John Paul Jones fills out the bottom end with some of the most ferocious bass runs that the 70's ever produced.
This song is also a great showcase of the interplay John Bonham has with the rest of the instruments. Where most rock drummers mirrored the bass player, Bonham's kick drum and snare pattern is mimicking every note coming out of Jimmy Page's Les Paul. With the thunderous backing track, Robert Plant's vocals are some of his most hard edged, as he delves into the storied history of Norse mythology.
The song may have already been a classic, but it took on a completely different life once it was used prominently in Thor Ragnarok. Then again, if I was fighting an army of demons and zombified gods, I'd want Zeppelin on my playlist as well.
