10 Greatest Comeback Albums In Rock Music History

6. So - Peter Gabriel

It's staggering to think of how much of a drop Peter Gabriel had when he decided to go solo. Considering that he was the freak of nature who made Genesis the super band that they were known as in the '70s, how in the hell was he the one relegated to smaller shows when Phil Collins decided to go pop? While Peter eventually found the itch to flirt with the hit parade, he was going to do it on his terms.

In every sense of these words, So is probably the closest that you'd come to a prog pop album, down to the fact that it actually has Kate Bush on the track listing. Outside of the collaborators though, Peter had reached a point where he could refine his ambitious sensibilities into pop flavored songs, like the Otis Redding pastiche on Sledgehammer or interpolating famous poets on songs like Mercy Street.

You also have to give due credit to the session guys behind Gabriel at the time, with Daniel Lanois making everything sound absolutely massive and introducing new ideas for songs, like having the bass player play his bass with drum sticks on the song Big Time. Any other pop record would be called too busy for having something like that in the mix. When the result is In Your Eyes though, you've created something that will outlive us all.
