10 Greatest Comeback Albums In Rock

8. Creatures of the Night - KISS

One of the cardinal rules of KISS is that you don't necessarily have to think too hard when listening to their music. This was the golden age of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and it doesn't get much better than putting together a great riff and writing songs about partying all night long. When Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons thought that their big comeback was by making an incoherent concept album though, it was time to go back to the drawing board.

As much as Music From The Elder may have been an interesting concept at first, it ended up being the last straw for Ace Frehley, who hardly participated and would leave soon after the album was finished. Even without Ace though, Creatures of the Night is the kind of album that most fans would recognize in an instant, with newcomer Eric Carr's drums sounding absolutely monstrous on the title track and Rock and Roll Hell. Compared to the more narrative driven songs of the last record, this is more in line with what the band were writing about on Destroyer, talking about the seedy side of rock and roll on tracks like Saint and Sinner and Keep Me Comin.

After playing dress up and trying to show people how smart they were, both frontmen managed to regain their image as well, with Gene adopting his Demon persona for the next generation of fans and Paul still holding court as the almighty preacher of everything rock and roll. Though Creatures of the Night might not have been the best selling KISS album by any stretch, it earned the band something better than any sales could: the trust of their fans.
