10 Greatest Comeback Albums In Rock
5. Back In Black - AC/DC
AC/DC always felt like the kind of band that was going to keep on hellraising until the sun burned out of the sky. While they might not have been the most original band in the world, living the rock and roll lifestyle sometimes is enough, bringing that bad boy attitude to every song they played and getting their first hits out of the deal on albums like Highway to Hell. That rock and roll lifestyle can catch up with you though, and everything about these Aussies was called into question once Bon Scott died of alcohol poisoning.
Not wanting to spend the rest of their days living in the shadow of Bon, the Young Brothers wanted to continue making music, drafting in Brian Johnson and making Back in Black as a tribute to their fallen frontman. This might be the same brand of AC/DC you'd expect, but the songs are much more fleshed out here, making the perfect renditions of everything that made rock and roll appealing, from the danger of a song like Shoot to Thrill to the nasty desires going on in You Shook Me All Night Long.
This is still an album for Bon though, and Hells Bells and the title track serve the purpose of passing the torch over to the next phase of AC/DC, with a bit more swagger in the delivery. We'll never know what the band would have sounded like had Bon survived, but Back in Black serves as the kind of sendoff worthy of any great rock and roll journeyman.
