10 Greatest Cover Songs In Rock Music History

8. Working Class Hero - Green Day

Any band who dares to cover the Beatles is going to have to be extremely careful. Since most of these songs are perfect in their original versions in the eyes of the public, you're going to need to do more than just play the song to win everyone over. Or in the case of Green Day, make it sound like an avalanche of sound hitting you all at once.

Which is strange considering Working Class Hero by John Lennon is far from an intense listen on its own. Though John's lyrics are some of the most scathing of his career, a lot of this song is nothing but him and an acoustic guitar getting more and more passionate with each verse. And it looks like Green Day's version was going to fall in that line too, starting with Billie Joe Armstrong's voice and an acoustic guitar, until the rest of the band comes roaring in as each verse passes.

This isn't like night and day dynamic changes or anything either. Compared to the intensity of the original, Green Day provides an amazing build to this song, as each instrument gets more and more frantic while Billie Joe's voice gets more weary and tired as the song plays on. Seeing how punk rock is the working class equivalent of rock and roll, Lennon himself would have probably been proud of this.
