10 Greatest Cover Songs In Rock Music History

9. Proud Mary - Ike and Tina Turner

Across rock's catalog, there are a few songs that just feel timeless no matter how many times you play them. In between the hippy revolution back in the '60s, Proud Mary by CCR was the perfect river boat anthem, as you choogle along with John Fogerty without a care in the world. That's just the lazy version though. What if you took it to the next level?

Opening with a sultry speech from Tina Turner, Ike and Tina's version is pretty much a complete reworking of the original in every sense. From the opening notes, you would think that this one would be a lot slower than the original, almost sounding like it could have been an old school gospel tune in some spots. Once the song kicks into high gear, this is the reason you listen to someone like Tina Turner.

This isn't a woman who's about subtlety, and the entire song from here on out is an absolute showstopper, with the backing vocalists keeping up with her ad libs note for note. Then again, there are probably some people who would prefer to put this in the soul category rather than rock and roll. Since they're not the same genre, how "rock" can it be? After one listen of this though, the rockstars of old could take to learn a few lessons from Mrs. Turner.
