10 Greatest Covers Of Bob Dylan Songs

7. The Heptones - I Shall Be Released

Dylan’s classic song of hope is already better known as a cover - specifically the rendition by his erstwhile sidemen The Band. While this version is a fantastic and inspirational piece of music, though, it doesn’t deviate far from Dylan’s original version.

More intriguing, then, is the 1969 version by Jamaican group The Heptones. Their rocksteady reimagining of the folk rock track unsurprisingly differs substantially from Dylan’s piece. It replaces the downtempo sway of the original with a shuffling, livelier reggae groove. Instead of warm guitars there’s piercing organs and everpresent bass.

This is no novelty cover, though, and the reggae rendition remains totally faithful to the soul and the intention of Dylan’s song. It’s a cry for freedom, both spiritual and physical, taking its cues from gospel music in the swelling, joyful chorus. The Heptones’ roots reggae music is the perfect means by which to present the songwriter’s message, a downtrodden people looking for a better life.
