10 Greatest David Bowie Songs
8. Because You're Young
For some reason this song very rarely comes into the discussion of Bowie's best work. It has one of his most interesting vocal performances of any song he's every recorded, and that's saying a lot considering how idiosyncratic his vocal style was.
Lyrically it has Bowie at his vivid and descriptive best. It has him touching on concepts of identity, mortality, addiction and what femininity and masculinity mean. As well as this aspect to his songwriting he is also extremely subtle and efficient with his messaging in this song. The end of the chorus has him singing "A million dreams, a million scars" possibly a comment on the inevitability of life to let you down. What were once promising dreams, are now just scars.
The guitars on the song are infectious, the pacing is perfect and the songwriting is top notch. Everything great about Bowie can be found on this one track.
