10 Greatest David Bowie Songs
3. Heroes
One of the greatest songs ever recorded. Period. The lasting power of this song is something most artists can only dream of. The power of this song cannot be understated as well. Bowie performed this song in 1987 in Berlin, and was later considered a factor in the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Bowie was even thanked by the German government after he passed for helping bring down the Wall.
The reason this song is so universally loved is because the themes are so universal. The narrator just wants love to work. Of course the song was written in Berlin and specifically the 3rd verse references the Berlin wall itself, so the political element as well as the emotional element is there. But the two come together in perfect harmony. The idea of love blossoming from a seemingly loveless place is a sense of hope so many try to have in their lives.
There's something about the droning ambient sounds in the background that make the song so entrancing to listen to, and we can't undersell just how important Brian Eno was in creating this momentous song.
Heores is the centrepiece of Bowie's entire Berlin period, and it ended up literally breaking down barriers.
