10 Greatest Drummers In Hard Rock

6. Keith Moon - The Who

Being a rock drummer in the '60s was not always the most glamorous position to be in. Whereas skinsmen like Ringo Starr may have gotten their fair share of adulation in their day, there was no one really flying off the hinges behind the kit that wound up on the charts. Once the Who came along though, the entire vocabulary of rock drumming flipped around.

Emerging as the true wildman of rock and roll, Keith Moon's larger than life personality was present every single time he sat behind the kit. While a lot of what he plays could seem almost incomprehensible at times, there was always a tinge of humor to his style, like on the amazing outro of Baba O'Riley. That's not to say that Moon was a one-trick pony either, as he restructured Pete Townshend's songs into musical juggernauts on songs like Bargain and The Real Me.

There's even a little bit of prog in his choice of drum fills, with the solo in the middle of Won't Get Fooled again being pretty busy for the average rock fan to take in all at once. For as wild as he may have seemed off the stage, Moon the Loon's only grasp on sanity came when he worked his magic on the drums.
