10 Greatest Drummers In Hard Rock
5. Dominic Howard - Muse
Most people tend to talk about the golden age of hard rock as being in the rearview. Whereas other bands like Avenged Sevenfold are still holding down the fort for rock and roll these days, some fans find it hard to separate them from the classics that they grew up with. While things might seem a lot more relaxed nowadays, Dominic Howard is the one drum hero of the modern age.
Though most of Muse's songs come down to the staying power of frontman Matt Bellamy, Howard's drumming is what turned them into the roller coaster rides they are today. Starting out as just a Radiohead-esque band, the real turning point came with Howard's switch to a more grandiose style of drumming, which worked wonders when blaring out over stadiums full of people. One listen to something like Uprising will tell you all you need to know, as Howard basically acts as the lead instrument with the bass and guitars being just subtle adornments.
Don't mistake that for just playing simple beats though, given the massive drum fills on display at the beginning of something like Assassin. Being one part prog, one part art rock, and one part Queen, Dominic Howard's way of weaving Muse songs together is the work of a drummer who really knows his strengths and when to push them.
