10 Greatest Drummers In Rock Music History
7. Phil Collins - Genesis
And now I present to you good people...the man who destroyed Genesis. Or that's what you would be saying back in the '80s. I mean, ever since Peter Gabriel left the band and Phil Collins stepped up from behind the drum kit, these guys stopped being prog legends and became modern pop stars. If you look a little closer though, Collins never lost his massive chops in the drum department.
In fact, you could argue that Genesis never really hit their stride until Phil was behind the kit, bringing with him different methods to percussion that blended in perfectly with the prog rock ambitions of Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford. From the sounds of Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, you can hear the real muscle behind Collins' playing, having been accustomed to more prog outfits before he got there.
Even on the first few records with Phil behind the mic, he was still flexing his chops on the drums as well, sprinkling in different tom fills that would put some of the greatest jazz drummers to shame. Also, you have to give him props for In the Air Tonight, as he toyed around with different recording techniques and walked away with one of the greatest drum fills in rock history.
Whereas you may know him for his soft pop days, you're doing Phil so dirty if you limit him to the hits.
