10 Greatest Drummers In Rock Music History
4. Stewart Copeland - The Police
There aren't too many drummers in rock who have the mantle of virtuoso bestowed upon them. Though there are technical wizards in the world of metal who can play double bass and make it look easy, it gets a bit dicey when you're laying down a simple groove. When the Police arrived on the scene, every modern drummer got an education with Stewart Copeland behind the kit.
The main draw behind Copeland's style is just how much crack he got out of his snare, which came from him allegedly standing on the drum head and tuning it as tightly as possible to get the maximum impact when he hit it.
That's just one facet of his drumming though. Being a part of the jazz world and trying his hand at prog rock back in the day, a lot of what Stewart does for these pop songs is a lot more complex to nail down, especially when you take into account all of the swinging hi hat work he does.
This is probably the clearest example in history of the drummer not being the dumb one either, since Copeland is acutely aware of music theory and tries his best to push himself that one step further in every song he does. In a world where rock was still looked at as a bunch of kids playing with instruments, Stewart Copeland was the one adult in the group.
