10 Greatest Drummers In Rock Music History

3. Keith Moon - The Who

When you're stuck behind the drum kit, you're going to have to do something a little bit extra to get the attention of everyone else. Sometimes you have to have some sort of outgoing personality or you're going to have to step up your game to be able to compete with the rest of the group. So which one did Keith Moon do? Both...at the exact same time.

Aside from his excellent drumming, Keith Moon was an absolute freak of nature away from the drum kit, being the epitome of a wild man by tossing TVs out of hotels and blowing up his drum kit at the end of the some of the gigs. That same kind of reckless abandon often translated to his drumming too, going on different tangents and very rarely playing just a straight rock beat.

You have to remember this was years before prog rock really sunk its teeth into the rock scene, meaning Moon set the precedent for the endurance test songs for drummers.

Despite playing some of the most complicated drum fills of the time, never once did it feel like it took away from the song, with the drum solo of Won't Get Fooled Again still sounding epic no matter how many times you listen to it. Though he left us way too early, anyone even remotely fascinated with Moon the Loon knows how much he did for the drum community.
