10 Greatest Duets In Rock History

3. The Battle Of Evermore - Led Zeppelin (Feat. Sandy Denny)

Led Zeppelin always had one foot trailing back into rootsy rock. Despite having more riffs in his arsenal than most rock stars could hope for, Jimmy Page ended up turning in fantastic earworms even when rocking an acoustic guitar. While Robert Plant was able to control his voice like no other rock frontman, the real shivers from the Battle of Evermore don't come from any member of Led Zeppelin.

As Plant waxes poetic about the descent into the Middle Ages, the vocals of Sandy Denny blow right past him, almost acting as the village siren coming to inform the town of the impending gloom. Given that Denny had already flexed her vocal chops on albums by Fairport Convention, this is one of the few rock vocal performances that can almost be described as spiritual, as if Denny is descending from the heavens to keep protection over the people, as she commands her subjects to dance in the dark of night.

Whereas Zeppelin had already had their blues rock swagger down to a science, this amazing descent into Middle Earth almost feels tribal, as Page's mandolin part sends you into a daze. Even though Denny only appears in a few spots on this song, it's virtually impossible to imagine the track without these impassioned cries.
