10 Greatest Eddie Van Halen Guitar Moments

5. Spanish Fly - Van Halen II

Along with being a great guitarist, Eddie Van Halen was pivotal in the world of guitar effects. From using different guitar pickups to creating the mother of all metal amplifiers with the 5150, Eddie was always trying to push his craft forward to create the most massive guitar sound anyone had ever heard. On the other hand, Eddie didn't necessarily even need any effects to really shred.

Serving as a sequel to his first guitar solo spot on the band's debut, "Spanish Fly" is a minute or so of Eddie annihilating an acoustic guitar, as he somehow infuses tapping into his unplugged arsenal. There's a little flamenco influence here and there, but for the most part, this is the most stripped down that Eddie has ever sounded with a guitar on his hand, where all he has are his hands and a vast knowledge of the fretboard.

The tapping on Van Halen solos are already tough to master on their own, but when you consider that Eddie is making all of this work on the harsh strings of an acoustic, things start to look a lot more impressive. Some say that the best way to see if a song is good is to strip it down to an acoustic guitar and a singer, but "Spanish Fly" showed that Eddie didn't even need David Lee Roth when he had an acoustic in his hands.
